Joseph Adler is an aging nobleman and soldier of fortune with a metal arm — a lasting reminder of the night he failed to save his son. Numbed by drink and spectacle, he has little hope of keeping his marriage from ruin.

Until Hector Roman arrives at his estate one Christmas morning. Young. Noble. Eager to prove himself. But where others see arrogance, Joseph sees a final chance to give his own life meaning.

When an assault by a rogue Janissary leaves Joseph's village in ashes, he and Hector set sail to reclaim a lost German settlement in Tierra Firme — an isolated continent brimming with giant ground sloths and carnivorous terror birds. In the west, a powerful empire already knows far more about the expedition than the newcomers realise.

As ambition and guilt begin to strain their fragile bond, Joseph must decide whether he can guide Hector toward honour — or whether the ghosts of his past will destroy them both.

"A cinematic debut. The landscapes leap off the page — I could smell the volcanic ash and feel the heat of the equatorial sun. An unmissable adventure."

"The research is extraordinary and the characters haunt you long after the final page. Reminiscent of the great adventure writers in its sweep, but with a voice entirely its own."

"I read it in two sittings. The moral complexity of Joseph Adler and the lush, immersive world-building put this in a league above most contemporary historical fiction."

About the Author

Roy W. Meredith

Roy Meredith is a historical fantasy writer. Raised in Maine, where he developed a deep love for the wilderness, Roy neglected the sensible things in life in favour of learning about dinosaurs and curling up with Michael Crichton novels.

A social worker by training, he developed a lasting fascination with human psychology — particularly with how ordinary people behave in extraordinary circumstances. Thanks to a few forceful nudges from mentors and friends, Roy learned that he enjoys this whole "writing thing" and has written about climate change, gambling addiction, and Stoic philosophy for outlets like Quillette and The Post Millennial.

Roy lives with his amazing and hilarious wife in a cosy suburb of Paris, France. When he isn't reading or working, he enjoys photographing rare plants in the city's many botanical gardens — or rescuing stray em dashes from the street to use in his stories.

"The Heavenly Citadel is more than my first book — it's a love letter to the lost world genre that's ignited my imagination for decades."

— Roy W. Meredith
